Information Sessions for Primary School Parents and Teachers

Small Steps is a program aimed at raising awareness and improving the recognition of anxiety disorders in children.

We do this by providing information sessions for primary school staff (teachers, principals, administrative staff) and parents. For more information email smallsteps@wayahead.org.au or phone 9339 6003.

Topics covered during a regular Small Steps session:

  • Signs and symptoms of anxiety
  • Different types of anxiety disorders and how they present
  • Evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders
  • Referral and treatment options

A Small Steps seminar runs for one hour and can be held at your school or online. Sessions can be conducted before, during or after school hours. Sessions for teachers are usually held during staff meetings or on professional development days.

We were fortunate enough to have Julie present the Small Steps Anxiety Workshop at our school. […] The greatest message was that early intervention and treatment gave hope for those students suffering from anxiety.  I’m planning to have [a Small Steps session] for our staff as I now realise that awareness and early recognition of anxiety are the key to positive outcomes. Thanks so much for your time and energy, Julie!”

We now have Small Steps modules available

Available modules include:

  • School attendance anxiety – after holidays and throughout the term
  • Managing anxiety during lockdown
  • Back to school after lockdown
  • Managing ‘big school’ anxieties – specifically for parents/teaches of soon-to-be kindergarten students

How much does it cost?

For your school or parent group

Booking through your school and holding separate parents and/or teachers sessions enables parents and teachers to ask specific questions relating to their experiences. Having teacher and parent sessions separate provides an open and safe space for people to ask questions that others in the group may want to learn about too.

To book a Small Steps session for your school or parent group contact the Small Steps Coordinator, alicia.brightwell@wayahead.org.au or (02) 9339 6003
